Unfortunately (again because of how dumb the garmin process is) you have to choose a Mac or windows based compressed file, filter it through the garmin software, and then wait for it to transfer, over slow USB cords. Again, the only negatives here are how convoluted and dumb the process is for transferring a file on garmin devices. the maps on gosfiledepot are very high quality, normally created by people who crave high quality maps for specific areas, and craft them themselves. Your issues and skepticism is caused by your experiences with the PROCESSES FOR LOADING MAPS on garmin products, not the maps themselves. But when actually following that track on the GPS I have it showing on the GPSFileDepot map so I can see all the other roads and trails in the area. If the road does not exist on the Garmin 24K map then I draw the track I need in Basecamp on the GPSFileDepot map which takes a lot longer. I can create a route in Basecamp in a minute or two, convert it to a track, and then load it onto my Montana. Really, the only advantage to the Garmin 24K maps is that they are routable. I solve that by setting the unit to "Night" view which renders the background of the map dark and makes the roads pop out in a light color. The only downside to the GPSFile Depot maps (for me, anyway) is that all public land (which is 87% of the State of Nevada) is rendered as a green color which, to my old eyes, makes it difficult to see the backcountry roads.

The GPSFileDepot maps are much more up to date than the Garmin 24k series maps and show a lot of the backcountry roads that the Garmin 24K don't have. And that includes my Nuvi 5000 and my RV760LMT in addition to the Montana. I have used the GPSFileDepot maps for years on all my Garmin units and they load up and work like a charm. avoid the possibility of a bad file corrupting internal memory or anything else. Looks like you can load them to a card by way of the card reader, rather than into the device. GPSFileDepot doesn't mention the file size for these maps. One of the forums I looked at says too much map makes for slow loading and possible crashes. I'd like to have nine or ten western states. Then put some state topos on one card and others on another card. Looks like you copy the files to you computer and move them into Basecamp, from there Garmin lets you load them on the device.Īnyone done this and can say what to watch out for? I'm thinking to put Birdseye on the resident memory before I add a card.

I have found this site, which looks like you can download state sized topo maps from it. I assume that means at some point on the map, the lat/lon coordinates are wrong.
